The 'elongated ball' bullet used during the Civil War was largely developed during trials held at Harper's Ferry West Virginia by James Burton, Master Armourer.

The US 1862 Expanding Ball Cartridge

A series of trials culminated in a new standard caliber of .58 and the selection of the refined Burton Expanding Ball as the projectile of choice for the US Army at the time of the Civil War.
